Apprentice Information

As an apprentice in Steamfitters Local 602 or Plumbers Local 5, you’ll have a full-time job with one of the many fine mechanical contracting companies in the New Jersey area.

Plumbers install and service plumbing systems of all kinds, from basic residential and commercial kitchens and bathrooms to massive piping systems that move water and other liquids from place to place. Fitters install and service heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

As an apprentice, you’ll be assigned to work with a journeyman member of your union. Under his or her direction, you’ll get on-the-job training on the basics of the industry, growing more skilled day by day. You may be doing construction work or service work. Either way, you’ll gain expertise and confidence.

Then, two nights a week and perhaps some Saturdays, you’ll attend classes at AFGE, Training for Tradies located in New Jersey. There, in your classroom work, you’ll gain even more valuable knowledge and skills, learning things like Gas Theory, CAD Drawing, Welding and Pneumatic/Electric Controls. The credits you earn are transferable to degree-granting colleges and universities, too.

Many of your friends will either be getting a higher education or working at a full-time job, but you’ll have the advantages of both, and instead of being a financial burden on your parents, you’ll be earning your own living.

Sure you’ll be working hard, and keeping long hours, between your job and your classes. But the rewards are great, excellent pay and benefits from Day One, and the acquisition of valuable skills on which you can base a career you’ll be able to look back on with pride.

At the same time, you’ll be providing a vital service to the people of our area, and to your country. Our modern lifestyle is absolutely impossible without the work done by plumbers and fitters. As you move through your apprenticeship toward journeyman status, you’ll be an important part of this essential industry.
